Empty repo to first paying customer in 11 weeks

A two-person team had a design and no backend. I built a lean, maintainable marketplace backend — listings, matching, payments, and notifications — that they could run themselves.

// The problem

The founders needed a real backend to pilot with carriers, fast, without committing to architecture they couldn’t maintain or afford with two engineers.

// The approach

A modular monolith — simple to run, easy to split later.
  1. Chose deliberately boring tech: a modular monolith in TypeScript on Postgres, deployable by one person.
  2. Built the core domain — listings, shipper/carrier matching, and a bidding flow — behind a clean API.
  3. Integrated Stripe Connect for marketplace payouts with idempotent webhooks.
  4. Added transactional email + SMS notifications and a minimal admin console.
  5. Set up CI/CD, staging, and observability so the team could ship safely from day one.
